TOM KEMP

Tom Kemp is a ceramic artist whose work bridges the worlds of calligraphy and pottery. Trained in calligraphy and inspired by the brush-written inscriptions of classical Roman architecture, Tom set out to revive the European brush writing tradition. Over time, his practice evolved toward abstraction, exploring the idea of “writing without language”—using mark-making to express the physicality of being.

About fifteen years ago, Tom discovered the potter’s wheel and was captivated by clay’s ability to create simple, beautiful forms reminiscent of three-dimensional calligraphy. Today, his work unites his calligraphic roots with the timeless craft of ceramics, bringing new life to the ancient tradition of writing on clay vessels.

Tom Kemp festival program

Friday August 21
MAIN STAGE – 10:30-13:30 demonstration

On the Main Stage, you will see how Tom’s distinctive style of abstract painting on vases developed. The presentation begins with a demonstration of formal brush writing on paper and culminates in a dynamic performance using a large brush to decorate a large ceramic vessel. The session combines elements of calligraphy, movement, and surface design, offering insight into the evolution of expressive mark-making on clay.

PERFORMANCE STAGE – 14:30-18:30

You will see porcelain vases being thrown on the wheel and then transformed with abstract surface decoration using brushes and other tools. You will see how porcelain responds on the wheel, how form and surface interact, and how different materials and techniques can be combined for expressive results.

Throwing Taller and Thinner
Make the most of every lump of clay on your wheel. Do your pots end up with heavy bottoms? Do your cylinders fall short of the height you imagined? Do you find yourself trimming away too much to get the right shape and weight?
In this class, we’ll focus on the essential techniques that solve these common problems. You’ll discover three key physical principles that allow you to maximize the clay in your final form. Through demonstration and practice, you’ll learn how to apply these principles so you can confidently throw pieces that are taller, thinner, and more refined than you ever thought possible.
