STUDIO SOHMAN
Studio Sohman is a ceramics studio led by Korean artists Kim Deokho and Lee Inhwa, located in the serene mountains of South Korea. The studio is renowned for its minimalist white porcelain works that blend traditional Korean aesthetics with contemporary design. Their creations often feature subtle textures and forms, reflecting a deep appreciation for nature and simplicity. The couple’s collaborative approach emphasizes harmony between form and function, resulting in pieces that are both utilitarian and artistic.
Studio Sohman festival program
Thursday August 20
MASTERCLASS – 10:30-18:30 first day
Friday August 21
MASTERCLASS – 10:30-18:30 second day
This two-day masterclass focuses on trimming—a key stage in wheel-throwing that defines the character and refinement of a ceramic piece.
For over 15 years, Deokho Kim and Inhwa Lee have used ultra-hard alloy trimming tools of their own design. Though technically demanding, these tools are essential for creating thin-walled forms with clean, precise surfaces. They offer a level of control and subtlety that lies at the heart of their practice.
Participants will learn how to use these tools effectively and gain insight into the artists’ approach to proportion, balance, and surface finishing—core elements of their signature forms.
We hope this will be a meaningful opportunity to experience their perspective and technique -shaped through years of working with light, translucency, and the inherent strength of material.
